When Harvey Screwbrain invented his wall-climbing machine, everyone
thought it wouldn't work. They were right! Quite simply, there was nothing
to hold the machine onto the wall. But how much of a screwbrain was
Harvey? Did he at least manage to get the wheels that were in contact with
the wall (A and B) to turn the right way? The inside of the machine is shown
above with pulleys (black) and cogs (white).

Dragons Alaranthus and Montal
The fully grown dragon Alaranthus has a weight equal to one-fifth
of his own weight plus the weight of the dragon Montal,
who weighs 800 pounds less than Alaranthus. How much
does the mature Alaranthus weigh?

4000 lbs.
Say a = Alaranthus's weight and m = Montal's weight.
Then
(1) a = m + (Vs)a
and
(2) a = m + 800.
Substituting m + 800 for a in equation (1) gives:
m + 800 ^ = m + ('/s)a; so 800 = (Vs)a, and a = 4000.
How Many Liars?
Molly Ride, pilot of the spacecraft, knew that some
Martians were truth-tellers and some were not. So
when she came face to face with three of them, she

The finned Martian answered her by rubbing his
stomach. His friend, a tall Martian with feathered ears,
told her that the finned Martian had said he was a

One. Since the finned Martian did indicate that he was a truth-teller, then the Martian with feathered ears was obviously telling the truth and must be a truth-teller. If the finned Martian was lying, then the horned Martian was a truth-teller. If the finned Martian was a truth-teller, then the horned Martian was a liar. So, no matter how you look at it, two of the three Martians were truth-tellers and one was a liar.
